Our organization has been using vmPRO along with a DXi4601 for about a year now, and we are very pleased with the results and the ease of restoring both individual files and entire virtual machines. That said, there are two things we would like to propose for possible future inclusion into the vmPRO software.
First one...scheduled backups. Due to SLA's and management requests, there are some virtual servers that we only back up on the weekend. Currently, the only way to do this (that I am aware of) is to actually edit the vm each Friday, marking it for export, then edit it again on Sunday night disabling the export. This works, but is quite a clunky way of doing things.
Second one is actually a bit more important. We are currently using Backup Exec to perform backups and restores of granular information within MS Exchange. It would be absolutely wonderful if vmPRO could facilitate the granular restoration of Exchange emails on a vm in the same manner that you can granularly restore files. We would happily pay for this feature upgrade, and I'm sure it would make vmPRO much more enticing to new users.
Thank you for a great product and great support, we are very please and have recommended this solution several times!

We address this in the upcoming release of 3.1. Let use know if you have request for enchancement after you get a chance to review the new scheduler. Release is likely later this month.

We currently have a way to this, it envolves image level restore and the native db utilities in exchange. I'm encouraging other to respond to the this post to clafiy our process.
Thanks Jeremy, glad you're enjoying the product(s).
Jon
Thanks to Jon for providing this initial response.
Also, glad to see that you are happy with vmPRO and DXi 4000.
Regarding scheduling, as Jon pointed out, this feature is included in vmPRO 3.1 which is due by the end of this month. It's a free upgrade for both Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition customers. There are a LOT of new features in this release, which I can not go into here. Look for a preview to Forum V customers soon.
For Exchange, we absolutely allow customers direct access to the Exchange .edb file at the file level from any backup. Accessing that file via your standard file browser, you can copy it to your local system and use the Exchange Shell to restore mailboxes. We are working on a set of instructions right now to provide the step-by-step of this.
Remember that all of the files for each of your VM's backups are available via CIFS or NFS at :
vmpro-appliance-address/recover/files/
Those set of images are actually coming from your DXi, but being re-hydrated and shared back out from the vmPRO appliance real-time at the file level. No need for a complex, proprietary backup search and unwrapping utility.
Thanks!
Hi guys. Mark...in your reply above you mentioned some step-by-step instructions for restoring mailbox items. Any idea on when those might be available?
Thanks you!
Im in the same boat right now and we have the need to do granular restores from exchange, SQL, and sharepoint. I havent done a lot of digging into this software and would love it if someone could point me in the direction of any documentation on how to perform restores of items in enchange and sharepoint etc...
TIA
