Defying VM Protection Limitation

VMworld 2013 has come and gone, but the theme of defying convention remains within the minds of conference attendees and justifiably so, considering the colossal amount of data that threatens to overwhelm their environments. IT professionals are not only left with the problem of  how to manage and successfully protect their rapidly expanding infrastructure, but also how to manipulate such a gargantuan task with limited budgets, time, and people resources.

Akin to a life boat dramatically filling with a constant flow of water, one obviously needs variation to keep them afloat to offset the danger of drowning. Tools such as paddles, buckets, and determination clearly are useful, but it reiterates the need for more options for VM protection.

VMworld was a mind blowing experience due not only to the excitement from partners and attendees, but also from the sheer amount of feedback received through industry conversations. As a sales professional, it was a phenomenal opportunity to utilize my recent certification in VSP from VMware’s Partner Network and to get an idea of what clients desire for their environments, particularly when it comes to virtual data.

What about Tape and Disk?

As my colleague Mark Pastor reiterated recently, disk is not failing on life support, but rather, has expansive use for retaining data in one’s environment. You can read more about how Quantum is really embracing use of disk for archiving here http://blog.quantum.com/index.php/live-from-vmworld-disk-isnt-dead/ on our Q&U blog. Quantum’s motto for rethinking VM Backup is not to remind industry experts of our renowned data protection and Scalar tape libraries; in fact, most of the attendees I had the pleasure of speaking with at VMworld were under the impression that was all we did, yet did so very well. The concept of rethinking backup is to expand the consumer’s mind in terms of products available, building out the aforementioned need to have fewer limitations in protecting VM environments.

How can vmPRO Standard Edition help?

Sometimes when faced with a daunting obstacle such as investing in a virtual environment, one may wonder question industry standards as viable options. While working at VMworld, I was surprised by the number of attendees questioning limitations with backup and archiving not only in a virtual space, but also in regards to their tape and disk. What I presumed to be an industry standard amongst our competitors was actually more of a limitation for their data protection plans. To give clients some breathing room, vmPRO Standard Edition raises the bar by including support for LTFS tape and disk along with cloud. This open standard to retrieve and protect VMs without proprietary backup applications from any medium is undoubtedly attractive for customers looking for a long term, economical solution.

The best bet of course is to see our open standard for oneself. Download and enjoy the utility of vmPRO Standard Edition at your convenience at www.quantum.com/freevmpro.
