Biomass for heat can be used in small scale units for individual houses, in heat contrac-ting projects, in district heating and in the industry. In any case the supply of high qua-lity biomass be it fi rewood, wood chips or refi ned wood is of essential importance for the rapid growth of this market. Biomass pellets are a suitable fuel type for a wide range of applications, from stoves and central heating systems up to large-scale plants, and with practically complete automation in all these capacities. This handbook, written and edited by experienced professionals from IEA Bioenergy Task 32 in cooperation with Bios Bioenergiesysteme GmbH, Graz, Austria, other IEA Tasks and external A CHP gas turbine plant fueled by product gas from a biomass fluidized bed gasifier has been constructed. The demonstration scale is 500 kWe for production of power and heat for the university campus district heating. At the present stage 150 kW power has been delivered to the grid. Combustion of solid biomass is the oldest and most mature technology for the production of heat and the main source for the provision of renewable heat today. The applications of biomass combustion comprise a wide range from domestic combustion units with installed capacities of a couple of kW to district heating plants in the MW range and District heating (also known as heat networks or teleheating) is a system for distributing heat generated in a centralized location through a system of insulated pipes for residential and commercial heating requirements such as space heating and water heating. The heat is often obtained from a cogeneration plant burning fossil fuels or biomass, but heat-only boiler stations, geothermal heating Small-scale DHS is referred to a network of users in which the distance from the heat source is in the order of magnitude of less than few hundreds of meter (Weber et al., 2007).In fact, the associated temperature and pressure drops are relatively low due to the short length of the pipelines in the distribution system (Hurtig, 2010).DHSs in the level of multi-residential buildings are more District heating can help improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, enable fuel flexibility, simplify building operations and maintenance, decrease costs, serve as vital infrastructure, and provide high quality jobs. Biomass Hot Water Woody biomass is commonly used for facility heating in three forms: whole logs or firewood, wood chips, and wood pellets. Systems are available from 6,000 British thermal units (Btu)/hr to over 100 million Btu/hr. Small systems, particularly small- and mid-size pellet and log systems, are available off-the-shelf from numerous manufacturers. The second one is "Green Heat Initiatives small scale biomass district heating handbook for Alberta and BC. March 2014." The most encouraging aspect of the second reference is that two examples of the new initiatives are in the Chilcotin. In 2011 pellet furnaces were installed in the Alexis Creek and Tatla Lake schools. The Handbook of Biomass Combustion and Co-firing. S. V. Loo, J. Koppejan. Published 2008. Engineering. Introduction.
