Quantum Forum for DXi V5000

The Quantum DXi V5000 Community Version. Why buy 20 disks when you can buy 1?

The benefits of deduplication, using disk at 20x efficiency (depending upon data, of course) is now available to anyone. Whether you manage IT at a company large or small, or just a large home network, you can download and install a free community version of the DXi V5000 with up to 5 TB of raw storage. If you like it and want to upgrade you can size the system up to as much as 256TB of raw disk. But with deduplication that 5TB of disk may hold 100TB of backup data, and the 256TB may hold 5.1PB.

As part of the rollout of the DXi V5000 – the newest member of the 15 year-old DXi family – Quantum is offering this free-forever community version virtual DXi to anyone. All you need is basic computer  and Quantum will provide the software to store data at ~20 times the disk capacity you paid for. For no charge. Forever.

To download and use the virtual DXi all you need is an X86-64 computer with 2 CPU cores, 4 GB of memory, and anywhere from 200 GB to 5.1 TB of disk (scale it to the disk however you want, and increase capacity later when you need it). DXi is downloadable as a .iso or a .ova file, and easily installs in Hyper-V, VMware or KVM. Linux with KVM is a good option and is both downloadable and free (never used Linux? There are plenty of YouTube videos to guide you through the install and configuration process. DXi install videos utilize CentOS 7).

But once you get your DXi V5000 up and running you have more than just a deduplicating backup storage device presented as Network Attached Storage (NAS), you have a full powered DXi. You can setup other V5000s (or physical appliance DXis) and replicate data between them with intelligent, secure replication that only transfers changed data – saving on bandwidth. You can use the features of DXi to secure backups against ransomware, keep point in time snapshot images of data without wasting disk space, and restore anything at any time – with the ease and speed of disk.

And you can use a DXi with Windows Backup and Restore (free on any Windows system) or Veeam’s “Free Forever for 10 workloads” community version and you’ve got a corporate quality backup system. For free. If you already use a backup technology like NetBackup or Veeam even better – DXi is integrated to work with all the major backup products. And all DXi features are included with the free Community version V5000.

Here are some links to get you started. Quantum’s Community Version DXi V5000 is available from here. Community support, videos on install and configuration, and other helpful subjects are available right here on Quantum Forum V community forum.

So whether you manage a big or small computer environment, can you afford not to use professional level products like these to protect it?

There is an install only video here: https://youtu.be/OsTQMXSxf64

And a longer install video below that includes first time configuration. The first video is the best for installation and then you can configure with the 2nd video.

There is an install video here that includes configuration. It's better to use the multiple disk install video above, but the end of this video can be used for configuration:  https://youtu.be/4_M6G804VnIhttps://youtu.be/4_M6G804VnI
