We are testing vmPRO to see if it is feasible to use in our environment. We have come across an issue.

We attempted to vmotion the VM from one datastore to another datastore and we received this message.

The method is disabled by

'Quantum:cf48c832a6c611e2bd4ccd9a05675717'

Call "VirtualMachine.Relocate" for object "uallprdsvn01v" on vCenter Server "uallprdvcs01v" failed\

We were testing this VM in vmPRO.

I need to know.

1. how to fix this vm so it can be migrated again?

2. Is this a bug or feature?

The feature is part of the vSphere 5 vStorage API, and it is designed to prevent the migration of a VM disk while a backup operation is in progress. Under normal circumstances a migration should be allowed again once the backup operation is complete.

There is a known issue with the VMware Virtual Disk Development Kit (VDDK) library which can sometimes cause this situation to happen, but it should be rare. You can usually resolve it by manually removing the snapshots attached to that VM, after that it should be eligible for Storage Migration again. You can read more about the VDDK issue here under the heading ‘EndAccess sometimes does not reenable relocation after PrepareForAccess.’:

http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vddk/VDDK-500-ReleaseNotes....

If the issue is persistent you can disable vmPROs use of the ‘PrepareForAccess’ API call by setting the following registry key on vmPRO:

vmPRO> reg set snapshot.prepare_foraccess 0
