Instant start of a virtual machine from \\vmpro\recover\images

Hi everybody, since some weeks I made a lot of test with vmpro. So far it's working fine.

But now I tried to find out if I can make an instant start of a vm by using the nfs share \\vmpro\recover\images.

I made a new datastore in vmware and pointed it to \\vmpro\recover\images, worked fine.

I browsed to my vm machine and I registered the vmx file, but failed (it appeared in the virtal center but it was grey and "offilne").

I know that I can mount the traget store (in my case a NetApp Filer) per NFS. But this does not help if I am using CBT.

Is it possible to start a vm from \\10.49.11.80\recover\images ??

I know that this it possible with Veeam and therefore I thought that it would be possible with vmpro as well.

Best regards.

Hi Dirk,

It is not currently possible to boot a VM from \\vmPRO\recover\images because that filesystem is read-only. In order for ESX to be able to boot a VM it requires it to be on a read-write location. Currently the only way to accomplish a direct boot is to boot a full backup from the NFS storage location (NetApp, DXi, etc.) You are correct that CBT/Differential backups are not supported for this process.

There is a potential read-write enhancement coming for \recover\images in an upcoming version of vmPRO, but it is not yet finalized and there is not a release date set.
