Error code: 2. Backing up a running 2008 R2 VM with VSS (VM Tools only) and CBT enabled. All other backups are succeeding with same settings. This one VM fails every time. It appears that the snapshot chain is not created correctly - "You are here" is listed at the same "level" as the snapshot, rather than under it. Manually creating snapshots with the vsphere client works correctly. No existing snapshots when backup starts, vSphere client shows snapshot being created and completing successfully, but, as indicated, it looks "wrong" in the snapshot manager. Anyone have any thoughts?
Hi Ben, Thanks for the detailed info about the problem. It looks like an issue that will be corrected by doing either of these: (1) install the vmPRO VSS Agent on the 2008R2 VM, or (2) disable the "Quiesce Enabled" feature for the VM.
The native VMware Tools quiesce function creates two snapshots that are not well behaved, as you've noticed in the VMware Snapshot Manager.

Thank you Barry! That did the trick. What's interesting is that the regular VSS functionality is working for all other (5) VM's. In any case, lesson learned - install the vmPro VSS agent for healthy snapshotting with VSS enabled.
