We are trying out the DXi-V1000, and it seems to be working well so far. I have questions about deduplication and OST. Is the deduplication ratio the same whether the DXi-V1000 is configured as a CIFS share or as an OST device? What specific advantages does OST have over CIFS? Thanks.
The deduplication ratio all depends on the type of data being pushed to the DXi so the number is different for each environment. Data that is compressed, encrypted, or deduplicated before it is sent to the DXi will not see a great reduction ratio. There are other factors to consider such as the rate of change between backups jobs. If the rate of change is high the reduction ratio will be lower, simply because the DXi has not see the data before. But to answer the question, the deduplication ratio will be the same on CIFS vs.OST if the data being sent to the CIFS share or OST storage server is the exact same data. All data regardless of presentation is filtered by the same deduplication engine and saved to the same block pool.
The major advantage of using OST vs. CIFS is that OST gives Symantec Netbackup or Backup Exec the ability to see both source and target DXi, manager the replication between the two and then restore from either source or target DXi.
