I'm looking at clearing down used storage on our DXi 6701 which is used as the backup target for vmPro and I've noticed there are backups from old servers that were migrated to a different DC and are no longer backed up on our site.
Am I able to just delete the appropriate folders via the file share or is there another way to delete the backup files?
As long as you mount to the share (UNC path if the share is CIFS) then you can simply delete data from the share.
If all the data within the share is not needed, they you can delete the entire share via the DXI GUI.
The only time you would not want to do this is if a backup software application still writes data to the share and the data you are deleting from the share was written with that same backup software application. If you manually deleted data in that case it would confuse the backup software application so it is best to use the backup software application to delete the data in those cases.
I should also say that if only vmPRO was used to write data to the share, then feel free to manually delete any data from that share. vmPRO does not encapsulate the data, it just saves it in the native format so vmPRO does not care if the data is manually deleted.
