Are you using a licensed copy of ESXi or the free VMware vSphere Hypervisor?

Just posted a reply about this issue in another Forum posting.

The free version of ESX does not provide the necessary VMware API for Data Protection (VADP), which is what we (and all other VMware-specific backup vendors) use for creating the snapshots on VMware for backups. Thus, vmPRO can not run on the free ESXi.

Now, with free ESXi 5.1, apparently VMware has changed to include this API, but our product doesn't know this and thus prevents execution. We will likely address this awareness in a future release of vmPRO.

Hello Mark, do you have a rough estimation about how long will take to vmPro to provide ESXi 5.1 support?

I did learn of some additional restrictions with the free ESXi 5.1 server that will prevent us from supporting it with vmPRO. There are limits on how many instances can connect to vSphere and we do not currently test with the free ESXi 5.1

We do and will continue to support the paid versions of ESX 4.0 Update 2 through ESX 5.1.
