Quantum Forum for DXi V5000

I am currently testing vmPro for possible use in our company, so I'm exploring all of the various features that we need to grasp before we make the final decision. One of these pertains to SmartView.

There are several individuals who have access to a virtual machine that I have set to be backed up by vmPro. They need to be able to access and view the file-level backups from time to time from inside that VM.

I am able to provide them a link via the \\vmProServer\recovery\files, etc.

I have separated their VM backups to their own datastore, which currently is a shared folder on our backup server.

The problem is that these individuals should only be able to view their own backups. But if they use the link I send them and sort of walk back up it, they have full access to all VMs backups, at the file level.

I need to be able to restrict them in some way so that they can ONLY read their own. I am not seeing any permissions settings that I can play with here. Can this be done?

===============

More details:

Backup server has 8TB and is a 2008R2 system. On the backup drives I have 2 datastore folders:

  - MainBackups -- shared folder where vmPro backs up all of the VMs except for 2 named VM1 & VM2.

  - VM1-2Backups -- shared folder where the VM1 & VM2 are backed up by vmPro.

Both of these are shared to the vmPro server and things back up fine.

The users of VM1 & VM2 have access to the backups \\vmProServer\recovery\files\VM1-VM2Backups.

This does work. But they can easily just shorten the link to \\vmProServer\recovery\files\ and see the MainBackups and access all files therein. This is not good.

Thanks,

~ Tommy

I think what your asking for here is an echancement for you to be able to modify the SAMBA share permissions (for the //vmproip/recovery/files share) on a idividual user basis?

Tommy,

I spoke with development today and we agree this isnt a current feature but we see it's validity for smart view.  We are invenstigating the possiblity of introducing this into a new release.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, could be a good feature. No one else has it yet that I know of. We've only had one client request it thus far, but it is sort of a deal-breaker for them, and its likely others may also come along with the same request.

I was looking for a way to modify permissions, but realized the locked-down shell wasn't going to allow it.

Thanks for the replies and good luck with the possible future feature!

We aim to please.  The product managment folks read this forum as well so its a good medium.  All eyes on this one, we'll see what comes of it.
