In a work zone, drivers must obey all traffic safety laws including the speed limit, drive absolutely distraction-free, adhere to all signage, and be on the lookout for highway workers. Work zone injuries and fatalities in Virginia had a dangerous spike last year. Fatalities rose 20%. Injuries increased 6%. Traffic crashes in general are on the fileslib. According to 2017-2021 statewide crash data, Florida experienced more than 53,000 work zone-related crashes, including more than 356 fatalities and more than 1,904 severe injuries. To combat crashes in work zone areas, our efforts focus on : Enforcement: Enforcing traffic laws within the Work Zone Area. Communication Program: Public awareness This is a two-day training course designed for construction inspectors, supervisors (foremen, superintendents, and private engineers or consultants) responsible for on-site inspection and placement of traffic control devices around state highways. This course also includes the 4-year VDOT Flagging Certification. June 17th - 8:00 a.m. till 4:30 p.m.
David Rush: I oversee VDOT's Work Zone Safety Program, ensuring we meet or exceed all U.S. Federal Highway Administration requirements for worker safety and mobility for motorists. My staff and I are responsible for the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual and road and bridge specifications dealing with maintaining traffic during construction, as well as VDOT's work zone training program.
