His father, John Abraham (Jack) Finzi, was a noted entomologist and reasonably successful shipbroker; he was Jewish of Italian and Portuguese ancestry. Gerald's mother, Eliza Emma (Lizzie) Finzi, née Leverson, was of German descent.
