Quantum Forum for DXi V5000

I want to use Directory/File based replication through internet between two DXi V1000.

The problem is the initial amount of data to be transferred through internet.

Which is the best practice to do this?

Is it possible to tranfer the data through an external drive and copy the data to the replication share in the target DXi and then enable replication?

Thanks,

The best practice is to set up the sync share on the target DXi that links to the source DXi and then run a sync job. If it a very large amount of small files or just a large share in general, the first sync job may take some time to complete.

I don't think you can copy the same data on both shares via an external HDD because before the data is replicated it runs through the de-duplication engine on the source DXi and then only replicates data to the target DXi that has been de-duplicated.

What happens if I do the first replication over the same LAN and then power off both DXi and place target DXi at the remote site?  Is it necessary to do a sync job?

That should be fine.

Set up the synced share on source and target DXis and then run the sync job to allow the share on the source to be replicated over to the target. You could then pause replication on the source DXi and move your target DXi to the remote site, once the target DXi is back online enable replication on the source DXi (make sure the send IP address on the source DXi does not change or is updated). You could then even run another sync job seeing the data change would be very small, or you could  mount the share on the source via UNC path and cross check it with the share on the target and if the two shares are close just let the continuous replication run from there on.

OK, many thanks!

I use USB drives to transport a copy of the data from the source site to the target DXi and it works fine. I normally setup a temporary share on the target DXi and copy over a backup of the data from the source site. When the first backup completes on the source DXi it replicates a minimal amount of data to the permanent replication share on the target DXi. We have multiple sites replicating to a central DXi and this is the only practical method to complete the initial replication.

OK, I will try this way.

Thanks!
