Quantum Forum for DXi V5000

Hello,

i'm testing the backup solution VmPro and i have a question about the native format backup.

I'm able to make full backup or cbt backup.

I see the share export/ on the VmPro VM.

In this document https://mosaic.quantum.com/docs/backup-solutions/backup-exec/Backup... , it's said that for recover my files, i have to use VmPro recovery wizard or vmware converter.

I thought that the "native vmdk format" would allow me to backup the /export directory to tape, restore it in my esx datastore and add the vm to my vcenter directly, without another step of recovery.

I've tried this : i copied a directory from /export into my esx datastore, i registered the vm in my vcenter, and the vm doesn't start. Is it supposed to work this way ?

If i use the wmPro recovery wizard, no problems, but it adds a lot of time for a recovery.

So, is it possible to recover from a vmPro backup without an additionnal step ? Just copy the directory with *.vmdk and .vmx ?

If not, it means that in case of deasaster, the first vm to rebuild is VmPro ?

Thanks for your help.

Regards.

Hello Mehdi,

You should be able to use the VMX/VMDK files you copied directly out of /export as long as they are from a Full backup -- it is not possible to utilize a CBT/Differential backup directly without using either the Recover VMs Wizard or utilizing the /import share.

If you are trying to register a Full backup to your vCenter and getting an error, what error do you get? Can you post a screenshot?

Hi ,

thank you for the answer.

In fact, i'm able to register my VM in Vcenter.

I have a problem with windows.

Itried with severals vm and i have the same problems.

They start, but they get stucks on the windows loading page, and after i get a black screen.

In safe mode, i see the dll loading, but it hangs after ClassPNP.sys.

I tried to boot on 2008 cd to repair the system but it hangs too.

Any idea ?

Hi,

i made further test, and it seems that all my windows 2008 R2 VM don't boot and the w2003 boot coorectly.

Is there any known compatibility issue with windows 2008 R2 VM ?

Hi again,

i found my error.

For recovering faster from a backup, i restored my backup ina nfs datastore.

On this nfs datastore (no hardware acceleration), the only vmdk format allowed is thin disk.

But my VMs disk are thick.

If i copy my backups with thick vmdk on a iSCSI datastore, they work fine.

So the problem was on my storage side.

This is interesting - is this a known issue or just something that cannot be resolved?
